100th Anniversary of the Establishment of Bank Polski SA

temporary exhibition

The exhibition shows the history of reborn Polish central banking and recalls the first issues of the złoty in the inter-war period. It also commemorates key figures involved in the preparation and implementation of the fiscal and currency reforms in the years 1918-1924. The establishment of Bank Polski SA and the introduction of the złoty were the culmination of a long process of consolidating the economic foundations of the reborn Polish Republic. They were also the result of both the generosity of Polish society and the activity and determination of politicians, economists and business activists. NBP’s exhibition recalls the events which confirmed that Poland is an independent and free country enjoying full international subjectivity, with a fully-fledged currency as one of the most important attributes of sovereignty.

From 20 May to 14 June 2024 the exhibition was presented on the square in front of the NBP Regional Branch in Katowice.

In 2024 the exhibition can be seen in several towns*:

Wrocław, Centrum Historii Zajezdnia, 18 June – 7 July

Kraków, pl. Szczepański, 9–30 July

Gdańsk, square next to the Kunszt Wodny building, Targ Rakowy, 2–24 August

Poznań, pl. Adama Mickiewicza, 26 August – 16 September

Rzeszów, Millenium Hall shopping centre, 18 September – 11 October

The centenary exhibition is complemented by a catalogue in two languages: Polish and English. Its pages recall the events and figures who played a particularly important role in the reconstruction of the institution of the central bank and the process of establishing a new currency of independent Poland.

An electronic version of the catalogue is available online. Enjoy your reading!
