Mission and goals

The Sławomir S. Skrzypek NBP Money Centre was established to popularize knowledge about economics and the history of money. We try to provide education in a way that is attractive, using various forms of presentation and modern technologies. The NBP Money Centre activity is aimed at reaching a wide audience and familiarizing them with issues related to the development of economics and money circulation, the functions that money has served throughout history, as well as the history of the creation and evolution of the banking system and central banking.

History

The idea behind the NBP Money Centre was initiated by the late Sławomir S. Skrzypek, who tragically died in the Smolensk air disaster. The activities undertaken during his mandate resulted in the establishment and growth of the facility, which is becoming more and more popular every year.

2008

Beginning of the first conceptual work on the facility. Collecting the first exhibits, exchanging experience with similar institutions around the world. Establishing cooperation with experts in the field of economics, economic history and the history of money.

2011

The NBP Management decided to name the Money Centre after Sławomir S. Skrzypek.

2014

Commencement of activities aimed at implementing the architectural design of the facility, approved by the NBP Management. The works covered over 2,000 m2 of space in buildings designated for the Money Centre.

2016

On April 20, the ceremonial opening of the Money Centre of the National Bank of Poland took place. It is the first multimedia numismatic museum in Poland, promoting knowledge about the history of money and economics in an attractive and modern way. The NBP Money Centre was opened to visitors during the Night of Museums 2016.

2016

Award for the NBP Money Centre – Facility Without Barriers – The NBP Money Center received an Accessibility Certificate for people with disabilities from the Integration Foundation.

2018

Distinction for the NBP Money Centre – Słoneczniki. The jury awards a distinction to the NBP Money Centre for the organisation of the “Family Saturdays in the Money Centre” meetings.

2018

The Polish monetary unit – Złoty inscribed on the Polish National Register of the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme. The UNESCO Register includes a set of złoty coins, their specimen and banknote designs from the period of the Second Polish Republic, which are presented in the permanent exhibition of the NBP Money Centre.

2020

Provision of audio guides for self-guided tours of the permanent exhibition of the NBP Money Centre (initially the tour paths were available in two language versions: Polish and English).

2019

The NBP Money Centre participates in creating the content of the multimedia guide “Museums in Polish Sign Language” providing access to the NBP Money Centre for hearing-impaired visitors, counteracting the social exclusion of the deaf, hard of hearing and hearing impaired. The guide is prepared in Polish sign language.

2022

Award for the NBP Money Centre – Best attraction for children in Poland 2022. The NBP Money Centre receives a distinction in the category: Best Science Parks and Experience Centres.

2023

Awarding the Narodowy Bank Polski with the Guardian of Memory Statuette in the "Institution" category as part of the 10th edition of the Guardian of Memory award. It was granted for creating and running the NBP Money Centre named after Sławomir S. Skrzypek.

2022

Modernization the NBP Money Centre permanent exhibition, and comprehensive modernization of key multimedia elements for visitors.

2024

The best year in terms of the number of visitors since 2016, when the Money Centre is opened to visitors – 125,309 persons!

2023

Half a million reasons to celebrate – in January we have the honour of receiving our half millionth visitor.

A collection of unique gold numismatic items, gold bars and valuables, which once belonged to the National Defence Fund (FON), is presented in the NBP Money Centre. This is the only surviving part of the former FON treasure that has survived to our time.

NBP Money Centre’s Patron

Sławomir S. Skrzypek was born in 1963 in Katowice. He graduated from the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, and studied at the Warsaw School of Economics and the Kraków University of Economics. He obtained an MBA from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and also completed a Business Management course at Georgetown University. He started his professional career in 1993 at the Supreme Audit Office. In 2001-2002 he was a member of the management board of PKP (Polish National Railways), from 2002 to 2005 he was a vice-chairman of the management board of PKO BP, and in September 2006 he took up the duties of the chairman of this bank. Since May 2006, he was the chairman of the Supervisory Board of TVP (Polish Television Corporation). On January 10, 2007, Sławomir S. Skrzypek was appointed by the Polish Parliament – the Chairman of the Narodowy Bank Polski. On April 10, 2010, he died in a plane crash near Smolensk on his way to the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre. He orphaned three children. He was buried on April 19, 2010 at the Powązki Military Cemetery in Warszawa.
