The history of Zloty

temporary exhibition

In 2018 and 2019, we celebrated two important national anniversaries: the century of regaining independence and the century of the rebirth of the Polish zloty. As part of these celebrations, the NBP Money Centre prepared an outdoor exhibition “The History of the Polish Zloty”. Its aim is to familiarize a wide audience with the several hundred years of history of our currency, starting from the 16th century up to the interwar period. Thanks to the division into historical parts, richly illustrated and accompanied by short texts, the viewer had the opportunity to learn about Polish socio-economic reality in particular eras.

The outdoor exhibition was presented in a free-standing pavilion-rotunda, the shape of which refers to a stack of coins piled up on top of each other. The pavilion was covered with a transparent roof, printed with the obverse of the commemorative five-zloty coin from 2018. The walls of the pavilion were illuminated to encourage to visit the exhibition even after dark.

The official opening of the exhibition took place at the end of September 2018 at the Piłsudski Square in Warszawa. Then it was presented also in Jesionka near Rzeszów, Kraków, Rzeszów, Lublin, Olsztyn, Poznań, Łódź and Gdańsk. It was accompanied by numerous cultural and educational events with the participation of employees of the NBP Money Centre.

We encourage you to download and read the special release of Bankoteka, which was prepared in connection with the opening of the exhibition. You will find there a lot of interesting information and unusual coins and banknotes from the collections of the Narodowy Bank Polski, related to the history of our currency.
