Vault

permanent exhibition

The illumination of the stairs leading to the Vault at the NBP Money Centre bears a striking resemblance to the laser protection in banks. The massive vault door with its clearly visible bolt lock mechanism grabs visitors’ attention. This is not an original vault door, but gives an idea of the dimensions of real ones, which can weigh several tonnes.

However, the exhibit which arouse the most emotion is the bar of gold, which is on display here. You can touch it and even try to lift it! It is precisely in the form of such bars, weighing approx. 12.4 kilograms and with a certificate of the London Bullion Market Association, that gold is exchanged between banks, acting as, among others, a strategic component of foreign exchange reserves. In this exhibition room we have also placed a treasure chest, an 18th century metalwork masterpiece with an intricate mechanism, which prevented the chest from being forced open by strangers. We also present a collection of gold coins from all over the world, some of which have certainly travelled in such treasure chests.
